Michael J Winkler's new book A Question of Form (a lifelong interdisciplinary exploration of hidden form)
Michael Winkler is a National Arts Fellow in “Artists’ Books” (books that are themselves works of art rather than being books about art). His books are in the permanent collections of major museums and libraries such as the New York Public Library’s Permanent Collection, The Museum of Modern Art, The Smithsonian, and Germany’s Staatsgalerie. A mid-career retrospective was presented back in 2004 by the University of Pennsylvania (MichaelWinklerArt.com). His artists books are only one aspect of a lifelong project that defies categorization within the confines of any particular discipline. It's been described as scientific research, cross-disciplinary visual/conceptual art, experimental literature, and visually centered philosophical inquiry. He has published imagery of the surprising patterning encoded in the alphabetic relations of the signs for words (in the IMAGINING LANGUAGE Anthology —MIT Press and elsewhere). He published the “Geometrisonic” modeling of harmonic relationships in music in the Journal of the National Association of Jazz Educators , which resulted in a Special Members Award from the American Society of Composers, Authors, and Publishers. He’s produced publications and projects involving the philosophy of science and the nature of mathematical proof (some articles are open access at philpapers.org). A Question of Form consists of a uniquely presented combination of text and imagery that reveals hidden patterns of meaningful structure in a wide range of phenomena. It describes how a simple proportion and a familiar shape underlie an interdisciplinary cascade of radical, yet entirely plausible, alternative perspectives. These new perspectives challenge accepted ideas in the sciences, philosophy, and the arts. The method of their discovery consisted of a unique combination of rigorous research and intuitive assessment, which is conveyed in this new book through both a narrative of information and the opportunity for direct visual experience. The book is constructed in two parts. Part one is a traditionally structured work of illustrated non-fiction. Part two is an artists’ book that has been constructed in reference to the interdisciplinary context conveyed in part one. Its goal is to expand and deepen the experience of that context by fostering a sense of implication that transcends the limitations of logical description.
